If you create the right micro climate, you can grow really anything in our conservatory: Annuals, Vegetables, Orchids, Cacti, to name a few :
- Maintaining plants in small conservatories or greenhouses require a great deal more care than normally given that heat and humidity can build rapidly
- Therefore, monitor temperature closely and watch humidity levels; it is suggested that a hygrometer be used to monitor humidity
- Humidity is great for many plants but can lead to fungal disease and root rot in some plants
- A simple method to manage temperature and humidity is to establish a set time and duration for when the roof should be left open
- Using the log book provided with our conservatories is a good method of tracking and managing not only watering and feeding but also humidity levels
- It is also possible to install a small fan in the side roof panel of the conservatory; we are working on a few design modifications which should be available soon
- We also suggest researching the type of climate and soil ideal for your plants before giving them their new home in our fabulous conservatory
typical humidity & temperature ranges
Our greenhouses are great for managing humidity and temperature
The humidity level in the average home is often below 30 percent, yet most house plants, even desert dwellers such as cacti prefer humidity levels of at least 40%. Many require 60% or more. Relative humidity of 50%-60% is probably ideal for both house plants and people
create a wardian case terrarium
Why settle for a small terrarium in a tiny glass jar when you can have a large terrarium in one of our magnificent hand crafted Wardian case; here's how:
- Directly on the floor of the conservatory add approximately 3/4" of crushed gravel for drainage
- Sprinkle approximately 1/2" of slightly moistened charcoal chips to help prevent odors & mold
- Add 2-3" of pre-moistened potting soil
- Mound the soil in some areas and add plants where desired
- Add visual interest by adding stones, large rocks, small wooden logs
- When planting is complete, mist the wardian case terrarium a little and wipe any soil that has stuck to the side of the glass with a cloth
- Keep the top open until there is no condensation on the glass then close all the doors
configuring pots in our greenhouses
- Our greenhouses can accommodate up to 15 plants when considering a combination of 4" to 8" diameter pots.
- Of course more can be placed if solely using small pots …
- … for inspiration, we've assembled several configurations to consider using a combination of 4", 6", & 8" diameter pots
